How do I trigger a Card based on Referral Source?

Show a Card only to visitors who arrived from a specific channel or domain

Referral Source is a Card trigger that limits who is eligible to see a Card, based on how the visitor arrived at your page. Scroll Depth and Exit Intent control when a Card appears during a visit. Referral Source controls who sees it in the first place.

Use trigger based on referral source when the question you want to ask only makes sense for one audience: the people who clicked your LinkedIn ad, the people who found you through organic search etc.

Decide what you are measuring

Build one Card per source, not one Card covering several sources.

If you select LinkedIn, Google, and a partner domain on a single Card, everyone who matches any one of them sees the same Card and all of their answers land in the same result set. You will not be able to tell the three audiences apart afterward

Before you start

  • Referral Source applies to Web Page Cards only. It is not available for Email Cards.

  • The trigger is off by default .

  • Referral Source narrows who sees it once it is there. Both must be satisfied.

  • If you also have Scroll Depth or Exit Intent turned on, all active triggers must be satisfied. The visitor must match your referral source and hit the scroll or exit condition.

Set up the Referral Source trigger

  1. Open your Card in Card Builder and go to Deploy → Triggers.

  2. Find Referral Source

  3. In the referrer selector that appears, choose your criteria. The tabs currently available: Group, Domain, URL, and Tracking Code.

  4. Select at least one value. If the trigger is on and nothing is selected, the Card cannot be saved. Toggling the trigger back off clears the requirement.

  5. Save and publish Card

The four referrer types

  • Group — Matches when the visitor’s referral source belongs to the group classification you selected, such as Search Organic, Social, or AI Search.

  • Domain — Matches when the visitor’s referring domain contains the domain you selected.

  • URL — Matches when the visitor’s full referral URL contains the URL you entered.

  • Tracking Code — Matches when the visitor’s landing URL contains the tracking code parameter or value you entered, such as utm_medium=paid-social.

Selecting more than one referrer

The Card displays if the visitor matches any one of them and is suppressed if they match none. Keep in mind that responses from all matching sources pool into a single result set.

Where to deploy the Card

Page placement matters more for this trigger than for Scroll Depth or Exit Intent, because a visitor's referral information is strongest on the page they first land on.

As a rule, deploy the Card to the page your campaign or link actually points at. If your LinkedIn ad sends people to a specific landing page, target the Card to that page. If you are measuring organic search visitors to an article, target the Card to that article.

If your Card is not appearing

  • Confirm you are testing by clicking through from the referring url. Typing the URL directly or using a bookmark sends no referral information, so nothing will match.

  • Allow time. Narrowing a Card to one referral source shrinks the eligible audience, so response volume builds more slowly than on an untargeted Card.
