What does it mean when Recirculation Rate + Exit Rate is over 100%?

Understand why recirculation and exit rates don’t always add up to exactly 100%.

It’s normal for Recirculation Rate + Exit Rate to total more or less than 100%.

Here’s why:

  • Exit Rate excludes sessions that ended in a conversion

  • Recirculation Rate includes all sessions, including those that converted

So if a significant portion of visitors converted on the page, the Exit Rate will be lower (since those sessions are excluded), while Recirculation remains unaffected—causing the combined total to exceed 100%.

In short: The two metrics are calculated from different session sets, so they aren’t meant to sum to exactly 100%.
